See the same shelf styled three ways: for the kitchen, bathroom and living room. Here are a few tips to consider when styling your own shelves:
- Find balance from shelf to shelf. If one shelf seems busy, go light on the next. Seek balance both in weight and color. If one shelf has a lot of color and others don’t, it will stick out like a sore thumb.
- Remember the rule of thirds. When in doubt, aim for three vignettes on a shelf. For instance, on our kitchen shelves, we placed a stack of cookbooks, a vintage colander holding fruit, and kitchen canisters. Just be sure to vary the height and textures for a look that’s polished.
- Style the shelf with items you actually use. Pitch decorative knick-knacks with no real purpose and replace with items you truly work with, especially if those items have great packaging.
- Whenever possible, add greenery. Plants bring life to any space, including your shelves. Plus, they give an organic loose silhouette, balancing all of those straight lines.
