A Shelf 3 Ways

See the same shelf styled three ways: for the kitchen, bathroom and living room. Here are a few tips to consider when styling your own shelves:

  1. Find balance from shelf to shelf. If one shelf seems busy, go light on the next. Seek balance both in weight and color. If one shelf has a lot of color and others don’t, it will stick out like a sore thumb.
  2. Remember the rule of thirds. When in doubt, aim for three vignettes on a shelf. For instance, on our kitchen shelves, we placed a stack of cookbooks, a vintage colander holding fruit, and kitchen canisters. Just be sure to vary the height and textures for a look that’s polished.
  3. Style the shelf with items you actually use. Pitch decorative knick-knacks with no real purpose and replace with items you truly work with, especially if those items have great packaging.
  4. Whenever possible, add greenery. Plants bring life to any space, including your shelves. Plus, they give an organic loose silhouette, balancing all of those straight lines.
