Graphic designer, Heidi Bartlett, helps make Emma extra fly. Meet her here!
EMMA Magazine: Where did you go to school?
Heidi Bartlet: I attended the University of Cincinnati (GO BEARCATS!) and graduated from the School of Design, Architecture, Art & Planning (DAAP). I am so thankful to say I graduated from a program that is ranked amongst the five best design schools in the WORLD! Now, that’s something to be proud of.
EM: What was your major?
HB: I was originally accepted as a Fashion Design major, but after my first year I made a strategic move from Fashion Design to Graphic Design. I felt to be successful in fashion you needed to live in very specific locations and I didn’t want to be held to that. I also didn’t want to potentially have a college degree and end up in a department store dressing mannequins. Don’t get me wrong though, it is still one of my dreams to learn how to design and make my own clothing. One day, one very awesome day.
EM: What are your long term career goals?
HB: Right after graduating, I started my own design studio, idieh design. (Yes, it’s my name backwards. So cool, right?) So, it’s no surprise my long term goal is to continue to grow the company to be as successful as possible. To add to that, I launched my online shop, The Love & Laughter Shop, at the beginning of this year. With both the studio and the shop, my mission is to empower the modern girl to embrace who she is and her individuality through design. Be different. Love yourself. Embrace the good and the bad. Don’t be afraid to express yourself. Wear your heart on your sleeve and let your true colors shine.
I’ve definitely learned along the way to not get too caught up in long term goals. Therefore, I prefer more short term aspirations. My history has proven it is best to take it day by day and enjoy the journey and not get so caught up in the finish line.
EM: Favorite TV show?
HB: I’ve always been a follower of Grey’s Anatomy and finally got caught up on True Blood. Just a few weeks ago I started watching Dexter and I am sold. All in all, you give me a twisted story and absurd characters (that I ironically always relate to) and I’m hooked. Vampires or magic? I’m in.
EM: Do you have a guilty pleasure?
HB: Many, actually. I’ll start with Usher. This man can sing and dance so he pretty much owns me. From his charming smile to his over-the-top confidence, he’ll always be my celebrity crush…until we meet in person. Then he’ll just be mine.
Harry Potter. I’ll admit I wasn’t in the crowd that read all the books, but once the movies came out, I was hooked. You can find me having a HP marathon probably every other weekend. I figure every weekend is a little over the top.
Candy. It’s a must. Love it. Can’t live without it. But no chocolate. I go for the sweet, sour, and chewy kind.
Dancing. Find me some good hip hop music and a 2 x 2 space, and I’m in it to win it. No matter the place or time. Music just makes my heart dance.
EM: What are 3 things in your bag at all times?
HB: Candy. (Seeing a theme here?) My motto: Life without candy is just absurd. Chewy Sweetarts are, hands down, my go-to candy.
Tory Burch Sunnies. Very rarely am I without them in sunny Arizona.
Lip Gloss & Chapstick. The brighter, the better. My favorite lip gloss at the moment is Nars Turkish Delight. It’s more of a natural tint, but it is awesome over a bright pink lip. I recently discovered Nipple Balm, too. No joke, it’s amazing. My boyfriend and I refer to it as Boob Butter. It sounds SO MUCH better, right?
EM: Favorite place to travel to?
HB: I’ve been lucky to have studied abroad in Spain, visited Jamaica a few times, and experienced the snowy mountains of Italy & Switzerland. But I would love to travel to a secluded, private island. You know, where the little hut is out over the water and no one is in sight for days (except for those that need to fluff your pillows). I think a good start for this type of environment is Belize where I can explore the Mayan Ruins and experience a rain forest firsthand. Sounds amazing, right?
EM: Any hobbies?
HB: I play in a weekly co-ed sand volleyball league. I’m pushing 5’ 4” so I don’t do much slamming of the ball in the opponent’s face. Instead, I just let them do it to me. Most people like to kill the ball, I love to dig it. And, let’s be honest, our team might not be the best one out there, but we definitely have the most fun. When I want to relax, I’m always down for reading a captivating book or watching a good movie, preferably the super scary ones or a good Pixar animation. Creatively, I love to paint. I just don’t find enough time to fit it in as much as I would like.
EM: What do you love about Emma?
HB: I love the creative team behind Emma. They are an awesome group of ladies and I feel extremely fortunate to be a small snippet of this team. I recently joined Emma as the lead graphic designer and it’s been an absolute joy to become more than just a team member, but along the way I found a group of women who I can call my friends. They all bring their unique talent & expertise to the table to make Emma the success it is. I’m so stoked to see what the future holds for this down-to-earth, can’t-wait-to-see-the-next-issue, super creative magazine. I truly believe we all have a certain creative gene within us. It’s how we choose to exhibit it that makes each of us unique and Emma Mag showcases the many talents all of us have to offer.
